Helen S. Duffy of Kearny, N.J. died peacefully at her daughter’s home in Dayton, N.J. in the company of her children on March 17, 2020. She was 98. Surviving are her sons, Thomas and Michael, daughter, Kathleen, their spouses Diana, Cathleen and Dennis, seven grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
Helen was born in Little Falls, New York on February 22, 1922, the daughter of Michael and Anna Smereski. After graduating from Little Falls high school in 1940 Helen attended nursing school at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City graduating as a Registered nurse in 1943. In 1944 she married her “blue eyes” Thomas Duffy. They remained in love for 62 years until her Tom passed away in 2006. They made their home in Kearny where they raised their family, and warmly welcomed many friends around their kitchen table. In later years they took care of Helen’s mother and sister. In addition to raising a family Helen also worked as a nurse in Newark and bookkeeper in New York City. Helen’s two sisters Jane and Adele predeceased her.
Helen will be laid to rest next to her Tom on March 21st in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington, N.J. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research - www.lustgarten.org
