Paul McKenna, 84, passed away peacefully on June 11, 2020 in his own home, in Kearny, NJ with one last gentle squeeze of the hand of his wife of 50
He was born on February 29, 1936 on the family farm in
Coolmain, Monaghan, in County Monaghan, Ireland to James and Kathleen￼ (McCann)
In 1957 with a bag of sporting books in one
hand, his tool box in the other and a rosary in his
pocket he sailed across the pond on the ocean
liner RMS Queen Elizabeth, waking in the
predawn hours to make sure he could greet
Paul always joked that he was
“Irish Parts assembled in America”.￼￼�
Paul￼ was with the Essex County Carpenters
Local 1342 for over 50 years. He also owning his
own business, ‘Homac’￼￼. He retired as a Master
Carpenter from the Prudential Life Insurance
company in Newark NJ.
Paul enjoyed taking care of and spending time
with his family, especially his 3 precious children, 6 grandchildren; and sharing his phenomenal memory of sports facts and American history.
On June 11, 2020, ￼Paul passed after battling
a long standing neurological illness, not
Paul is preceded in death: by his parents￼, James
and Kathleen; his sister Mary (Frank Meehan)
his brother Francis (Rita) and his sister-in-law
Patricia Higgins Gilvey (John Gilvey).
Paul is survived by his loving wife Maureen
(Higgins), and their three children: Cristin and
her husband Douglas and their two children,
Christianna and Teresa; John Paul; Brian and
his wife Melissa and their four children, Lainey,
Jack, Lorelei and Evie Joy. He Leaves behind the Eileen O’Boyle family, beloved nephews Jack and Matt Gilvey and the McDonough families, cousins,
grandchildren, nieces and nephews and friends
whom he adored.
Because of current restrictions only the immediate family could bid him farewell.
There will be a Memorial Mass in Saint Stephens Church and internment will be at St. Joseph Cemetery in a Haverstraw New York at a time to be announced. The website will be updated with the information.
The Condon Funeral Home, Kearny, NJ has been kindly handling all the arrangements.
Celebration of Paul’s life will be held at a later date when conditions allow.
